Chelsea agree to pay €38m buyout clause, as they home in on targets
Wednesday's edition of French sport newspaper L'Equipe had a big feature on Chelsea. The front page had Jose Mourinho's face looking out under the headline 'L'EGO LAND'. Inside they spoke of a love affair reunited between Mourinho and Chelsea and how success was on its way along with the sideshow which follows the Portuguese manager everywhere.
More interesting for Chelsea fans than what the French think of Mourinho's personality was what they've learnt about his transfer plans. L'Equipe is generally very well respected and they claimed on Wednesday that Mourinho was looking to bring in Luke Shaw and one of Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao or Diego Costa.
Costa at 25 years old is 2 years younger than Cavani and 3 years younger than Falcao, he would also be cheaper than either. The Atletico Madrid man has a buyout clause of €38m and Spanish newspaper Sport said in their Wednesday edition that Chelsea were one of a number of English clubs prepared to pay it. Arsenal and Manchester United were mentioned along with Tottenham, but the latter is dependent on them getting good money for Soldado and Costa wanting the move.
Arsenal made a bid for Costa last summer, something widely reported in Spain but hardly mentioned in England. That was below his then €25m clause so Arsene Wenger could dither again. Manchester United don't need Costa unless they sell Robin van Persie or plan to have huge strength in striking depth. Chelsea would appear to be the likeliest destination as it stands.
