Renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who was shortlisted for the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction, which honours works by women written in English, eventually lost the award to an Irish writer.
Adiche was the only Nigerian and African to make the list, courtesy her novel, Americanah.
Irish writer, Eimear McBride, was announced as winner of the award category. The event took place on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. The award comes with €30,000. McBride picked the award for her book, ‘A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing’.
The Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction, formerly known as Orange Prize for Fiction, is one of the most respected, celebrated and successful literary awards in the world. The annual award celebrates the very best full length fiction written by women throughout the world.
