WIFE of the President, Dame Patience Jonathan, has charged women in Akwa Ibom State to continue in their support for her husband to increase from 40 to 45 per cent the number of women in government.

According to her, the movement was like a train, stressing that there would be no compromise on the current role they are enjoying in government.

She stated this at a PDP national women rally yesterday at Uyo Township Stadium, in the state capital.

She recalled that the promise of 35 per cent affirmative action for women have been recognised at all levels by the PDP government and commended Governor Godswill Akpabio for appointing women into positions of authority.

She cautioned them against been deceived by the propaganda of the opposition, adding that most of the opposition candidates had been in power and did little for Nigerian women.

The Jonathan administration, she said, represents a modern breed of leadership in the country, saying the  “fight against corruption” strategy by the opposition remained a campaign tool meant to deceive Nigerians.

She appealled for support for all PDP candidates in the elections and called on them to turn out en mass and vote “the party that has an agenda for Nigerian women.”

Akpabio, in his speech, commended the President’s wife for her efforts in enlightening Nigerian women on the need for continuation of the transformation of Nigeria and assured her of over 1.5 million votes from the state.

Akpabio said that the PDP governors meeting in Lagos was to let the opposition know that the 21 governors remained united in their efforts to instill a credible government in Nigeria, adding that those who truncated democracy in Nigeria would not be allowed to rule the country.

In her welcome remark, Mrs. Unoma Akpabio assured that women in the state have not changed their stance to voting for Jonathan.

Deputy Governor Valery Ebe said the PDP government in the state has endeared itself to the women by initiating policies and programmes that has enhanced their economic and social status.
