Thierry Henry rarely missed a chance to hurt Manchester United on the football pitch, and the former Arsenal striker is certainly revelling in their misfortune as a pundit.
Henry scored nine goals against United over the course of a decade while playing for the Gunners, a phenomenal strike-rate against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
It was all-the-more impressive considering that Henry was often playing, and scoring, against the Premier League champions – it is fair to say that few inside Old Trafford were said to see Henry’s departure to Barcelona in 2007.
Arsenal’s all-time leading goal-scorer, Henry clearly loved getting one over Manchester United, so it was interesting, if hardly surprising, to see his comments on David Moyes’s side this week. Manchester United are lagging 13 points behind the league-leading Gunners, and Henry was quick to rub salt into the wound.
“When we went to Manchester United, I can say it now, we knew they were going to come out strong,” said Henry, who was in the Sky studios to provide analysis on the Champions League.
“But now when I see teams going to Old Trafford, they are not even scared. They play. Some teams didn’t even pass the halfway line. But when I see teams now, they are comfortable - they pass the ball around.”
Not content with that poke in the eye for his old rivals, Henry was positively purring about his old side, who he believes can now beat anyone they play against, after the Gunners sealed their qualification for the last-16 of the Champions League in Naples on Wednesday evening.
He said: “I think the game against Bayern Munich [when they won in Germany in the Champions League last season] did a lot for them, knowing that they can beat the champions away from home – and well – did a lot for the young team. For me, since that game, everything has changed.”
