Mark warns against imposition of candidates
Ahead of the forthcoming convention of the PDP, a former Senate president, David Mark, has cautioned his party’s leaders against imposition of candidates.
Senator Mark recalled that the defeat of the PDP in the last general elections could be traced to imposition of candidates and the impunity of some leaders.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark stated this at a meeting with the executive members of the Benue State Chapter of the PDP in his Otukpo country home at the weekend.
He said it was incumbent on the party leaders and members to allow the popular will of the people to prevail at the convention.
The statement read in part: “If we must uphold the sanctity of democratic culture, we must follow the path of honour like the Democrats and Republicans in the United States of America or the Labour Party or the Conservatives in the United Kingdom, who hold on tenaciously to their political ideologies no matter the odds.”
Mark said that he would not leave the PDP, a platform, he said, had afforded him the opportunity to contest and win elections since 1999.
Mark reminded party faithful to work hard in the days ahead as credible opposition and overcome the party’s challenges.
