In Focus: Oblak would be a fitting replacement for De Gea
As reported by The Independent, Manchester United are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak this summer, should David De Gea leave for Real Madrid.
What’s the story?
Despite being at United for six years, De Gea’s time at Old Trafford could be coming to an end, which would leave a massive hole that needs filled by Jose Mourinho.
To that end, The Independent reckon United will be moving for Oblak, who has become number Atletico Madrid in the wake of Thibaut Courtois’ spell at the club.
Is a move for the Slovenian goalkeeper, who is reported to have a £85m release clause in his contract, the way forward for the Red Devils?
Oblak certainly has the pedigree that would suggest he is capable of filling De Gea’s boots, should he move to his native Spain this summer. With over 100 appearances for Atletico since joining in 2014, he’s become one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga.
Last season he set the all-time record in the Spanish top-flight, conceding just 18 goals on his way to the Ricardo Zamora Trophy, handed out to the ‘keeper with the lowest goals to games ratio.
That’s something that De Gea himself didn’t manage to win when he was Atletico, showing that Oblak has a potential possibly even greater than the Spanish United star.
If they do have to say goodbye to their number one in the summer, we couldn’t think of a better replacement.
